When you’re starting out, I recommend purchasing a kit that comes with a lens or two. Usually, a basic lens and a basic zoom lens should be fine. The basic lens will be used for photos that are within a reasonable space. If you are doing a photograph of something in the distance, such as a landscape, then you would use a zoom lens to pull in details of objects off in the distance.
After purchasing the camera body, the lenses can be the most expensive purchase. Some lenses can cost hundreds of dollars and can produce great images. However, I would recommend just basic lenses for the beginner and the hobbyist photographer.
